The Wrist Watch – A Closer Look

In today’s world the wrist watch is a common item. Most people own one, and many own entire collections of what was once just a timepiece. A few technological advancements in the late 1800’s allowed the wrist watch to become more accurate, and it was actually the onset of war that made the wrist watch a popular item.

In the Anglo-Boer war the British were outnumbered. With recent advancements in weaponry, a new level of precision was required to coordinate their attacks. They achieved this with a makeshift version of the wrist watch. The common watch further gained in popularity as a military tool in WWI. Again the troops were fitted with wrist watches to tell time, and coordinate their efforts.

After the World War I, the wrist watch began to grow in popularity. Of course that popularity has continued to grow right through to today.

Avoid shocks

Try to avoid ever dropping your watch or knocking it against things. Sudden shocks can cause your watch to malfunction. Although most watches can withstand shocks experienced in daily activities, for high impact sports or working, consider the Casio G-Shock range..

Avoid high or low temperatures

A watch should be kept in normal outdoor temperature ranges. Do not leave it in sunlight for prolonged periods as they may cause the watch to malfunction. Low temperatures will generally affect the accuracy of the watch only temporarily.

Avoid strong magnets

Although watches are unaffected by normal domestic items such as speakers, avoid putting your watch near anything that creates a strong magnetic field.

Keep your watch clean

Always keep your watch dry. If it is a waterproof watch, you should rinse it in tap water after using it in the sea, and it should always be dried thoroughly after use. Always use a soft cloth when trying to polish the watch. Do not use any abrasive cleaning fluids or chemicals. You should not polish gold plated watches vigorously or you risk removing the gold plating layer. This applies even to PVD gold plated watches.

If your watch has a leather strap, you should wipe this with a soft damp cloth to keep it clean. If it is a metal bracelet watch, then you should use a brush with mild soapy water to regularly clean it. You should avoid allowing water to touch the case of the watch if it is not water resistant to a standard of 50 metres or more. If you are looking for a dress watch which has exceedingly high water resistancy, you should consider Rotary watches.

If you suffer from skin irritation, this may be due to dirt collected on the watch.
