Citizen – 78 Years of Innovation

When it comes to watches, there are many companies out there that boast impressive histories. Some of those companies can even say they changed the way things were done in the industry. One of those companies is a Japanese watchmaker. Citizen watches can boast more innovations in the past 78 years than any other company out there.

Citizen got its start in 1918, when the Shokosha Watch Research Institute was founded. Their original intent was to create a watch company that was close to the hearts or people everywhere. To fit with that goal, 12 years later (in 1930) the company was renamed, the Citizen Watch Company. Since that time Citizen has become a global company, and with some of their technical innovations they have met their original intent.

In the company’s infancy, they led much technological advancement in Japan. Through the 1940s and 50s the Citizen Watch Company created many firsts in the Japanese market. Some of these include: the first calendar watch, the first wrist watch with alarm “Citizen Alarm”, the first water resistant watch “Parawater”. Those innovations, and the success that came with them, led the company to global expansion. In 1949 the Citizen Trading Co. was established.

The company’s research and development never stopped with their expansion. As a the world’s largest watch manufacturer (a title they have held since 1986), Citizen has designed the worlds slimmest LCD watch, created the first watch with voice recognition, and they were the first to design a dive watch with a depth sensor.

In the past 78 years the times have changed, the people have, but one thing hasn’t. Citizen is still a company close to the hearts of people everywhere. Today you will find the Citizen line up includes technologies like Eco-Drive.

This new technology is the most advanced light power system on the market today. If you’re in the market for a new watch, it may be worth your time to look at a company that has led the advancement of the watch industry. A Citizen Eco-Drive watch is one of the world’s best!

Designer Watches for Gents

When you think of the gentleman’s watch, you may get an image of a high end watch from a Swiss watchmaker. Of course, for many gents that may be the watch of choice. On the other hand, for the rest of us, something more is required. We want a gent’s watch that makes a statement; a watch that says something about who we are.

To accommodate those men, we carry many designer watches for gents. There is no better way to complement your look than with a watch from a big name in the fashion industry.

Diesel Watches for Gents

The Italian design company, Diesel, is another big one in the fashion world. For the gent who really likes to make a statement, the Diesel collection may be a good place to look. Diesel is a company that founded its business on going against the grain, and that same philosophy can be seen in every Diesel watch.

Fossil Watches for Gents

Fossil is an American design company that got their start in watches. Their original idea was to bring style to the watch industry. Today their product line includes more than just watches, but that same push towards something new can be seen in each and every Fossil Watch. Their collection of gent’s watches includes some truly off-the-wall designs that really say something about who you are.

The Gents Watch from Guess

Of course an article on designer watches would not be complete without mentioning Guess. As a company Guess is a global leader in fashion design. What started with as one designers dream to bring fashion to the common people, has turned into the largest design company in the world.

The line of Guess watches is no different that their clothing; each one is stylish, high quality, and also quite affordable.

Casio –A History of Invention

We often talk about innovation and history on our site. Usually this history pertains to watches. Today I want to look at a company with a slightly different history. This company does have a tradition of innovation, and today they manufacturer some of the most advanced watches on the market. They didn’t always make watches, however. Casio Electronics got its start with calculators, and since their first model they have a proven history of invention.

Casio was founded in 1946 by Kashio Todao. The company, originally called Kashio Seisakujo, started manufacturing a ring mounted cigarette holder at about this time. With the success of his first invention, Todao, and his brothers, decided to design an electronic calculator in 1949.

With eight years of design and hard work the brothers finally marketed their first electronic product in 1957. The Casio 14-A was a truly innovative calculator design for its time. It was the first calculator to use a 10 digit keypad, and it was the first to use only one screen to display numbers. More than that, the 14-A was the world’s first all-electric calculator.

This first product took Casio to success in Japan. Throughout the next ten years, further innovations led them to become a global company. In 1964 the company developed Japan’s first desktop calculator. By 1967 they had expanded to US, Canadian, and European markets with the world’s first programmable desktop calculator. Casio’s product development didn’t stop there. In 1972 they released both the first scientific calculator, and the first personal (hand held) model.

In 1974 Casio decided to diversify their product line to maximize profits, and the Casiotron Electronic wrist watch was born. From that date forward, the list of world firsts grows.

• 1976 – Casio Released the first combination clock-calculator
• 1978 – The Casio Mini was the first card-sized calculator
• 1981 – The first electronic dictionary was released
• 1983 – The first shock resistant watch and the first digital diary

This list could go on and on. Since their initial expansion into watches Casio has expanded into many other products areas (and so has their list of inventions). They have become a global leader in electronic innovations.

With over 50 years in Business, it is enough to say that Casio, is one company founded with inventiveness. That foundation has continued right through to today.

At Watch Shop, we stock almost the entire range of Casio watches.

Citizen Eco-Drive – Technology That Works

When it comes to technology things always seem to go wrong: The battery on your latest new gadget dies at the most inconvenient time, and of course you never seem to have the right size battery to replace them. As much as technology eases life it today’s world, it can also hinder it when we come to rely on that new gadget. For wrist watches, at least, there is an answer.

What if you could have a watch that didn’t need a battery? What if we also told you that the same watch could charge itself to run for years in complete darkness?

With Eco-Drive, from Citizen, you can. Eco-Drive is the most advancement power management system available in a watch today. It allows you to simply place your new watch on your wrist, set it, and let it run. There is no need to worry about battery life, or about your watch quitting at an inconvenient time.

How Eco-Drive Works

Eco-Drive watches charge themselves when they are under light. Unlike traditional solar cells, it doesn’t have to be natural light. Even under a standard incandescent bulb your Eco-Drive watch will charge itself. When you wear your Eco-Drive, and it is exposed to a light source, that light is absorbed through the dial and the face. An advanced solar cell below converts that light energy to run the watch. Excess energy is used to charge a special cell that keeps your watch running when light isn’t available.

Many Eco-Drive watches include a power save function. This function activates when the watch is in the dark. When in power saving mode the time will be kept, but other features shut down to conserve energy. An Eco-Drive watch with this function can keep the time for up to 4 years without ever being exposed to light.

This new technology from Citizen is now included on most wrist watch models from Citizen Watches. For those of us who prefer, the set it and forget it model, an Eco-Drive from Citizen is a great choice.
